We talked to the TeenVote2020 Committee about what they’ve been doing since the uprisings began, and what they think comes next for America.
Something big is happening. After all the statistics about the fatality rate among Black Americans who are disproportionately dying from COVID-19 and losing their jobs during the pandemic, the decades of systemic disenfranchisement, and the headlines about Black lives lost at the hands of police, we’re witnessing a reckoning.
The deaths of Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, Tony McDade, David McAtee, Sean Reed, Nina Pop, and Ahmaud Arbery have brought tens of thousands of people in all 50 states and across the world into the streets to demand justice and an end to police brutality.’s Teen Vote committee. Rather than ask specific questions for the June installment, we asked them to speak freely about what they’ve been doing since the uprisings began, and what they think comes next for America.
So when I saw those kids I debated posting black squares and “I don’t understand but I stand with you” posts, I felt outraged. Changing your viewpoints and enlightening yourself is one thing, but Black Lives Matter is NOT a trend....
Non-Black people need to use our privilege to donate, protect Black people from the police at protests, stand up for Black people in our communities at all times, and talk to those around us about these issues to show them what is right. Even posts about dissecting your own white privilege are masturbatory: You are not a hero for recognizing that you are privileged, and you deserve no online praise for it.
