Everything from Queen Victoria's personal saddle to a 1,000-year-old pair of Viking shoes is on display

Northampton's Museum of Leathercraft is perfect for any history fan. As you can tell from me holding this Elizabethan bible during my visit last week.

The 2,000-year-old flap of a Roman tent, the saddle of a Samurai soldier and Queen Victoria's highchair were all there to see. But then James and Graham led me to boxes containing the downright ridiculous, including Samuel Pepys's wallet, a vase made of camel intestine, King George III's portable toilet and even scraps of the Dead See Scrolls.

Rumour has it the collection began when Spiers and Waterer gave £5 to each of the museum's trustees and told them to"go and buy something leather." From then, the collection grew and grew until it contained over 10,000 objects and 30,000 documents, all telling the story of leather; from Stone Age Britain, through the Egyptians and Romans, Medieval times, Victorians and on to the present day.
