German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul says Germany wants more Canadian LNG and sees a clear market in Europe as supply chains face threats. He also cited renewable energy cooperation and a coming LNG Canada Phase 2 announcement.
German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul says Germany wants more Canadian liquefied natural gas and sees a clear market for it in Europe. In an interview with CTV Question Period airing Sunday, Wadephul told host Vassy Kapelos there is of course a market for more Canadian LNG in Europe.
He said Germany must diversify its energy sources, not only because of Russia s war against Ukraine, but also because of instability in the Middle East. Wadephul pointed to risks around the Strait of Hormuz and recent developments near Bab el Mandeb, saying our supply chains are under threat. Russia s war on Ukraine has pushed Germany to change its energy strategy and move away from dependence on Russian supplies.

Germany Seeking Energy Diversification From Africa And Canada
Wadephul said Germany is looking to Africa, including Nigeria, as well as to Canada and the United States. He added that Germany must also speed up the transformation of its entire energy infrastructure toward renewable systems. The minister called that shift the future and said geopolitical circumstances are another strong reason to move faster.
Asked whether faster renewable energy growth would hurt German trade with Canada on conventional sources such as LNG, Wadephul answered emphatically: No. He said renewables still take time to scale up, and he described them as something Germany and Canada should exchange and develop together. Wadephul said Germany has a huge need for gas and called LNG a very needed source of energy.
He also said there is room for Canada to work with Germany on renewable energy technology, not just on fossil fuels. The record on Canada Germany renewable energy cooperation is mixed. A 2022 deal signed under former prime minister Justin Trudeau, the Canada Germany Hydrogen Alliance, has been plagued by delays and missed its initial target of starting exports by 2025. Still, leaders of both countries continue to pledge their support for the program.
Ksi Lisims LNG Deal With German Firm Securing Energy For Europe
Canada and Germany announced an agreement in May between Ksi Lisims LNG on British Columbia s West Coast and Germany s state owned Securing Energy for Europe, known as SEFE. That deal covers the purchase of one million tonnes per annum of LNG for up to 20 years, with deliveries expected to begin by the early 2030s. European officials have expressed strong interest in Canadian LNG for years.
In separate interviews on CTV Question Period in 2024, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and then Polish president Andrzej Duda both said they would be interested in buying Canadian LNG. Under Trudeau, the federal government insisted a business case for those exports to Europe did not exist. The government led by Prime Minister Mark Carney says the opposite. Canada has one major LNG export terminal up and running, LNG Canada, located in Kitimat, British Columbia.
LNG Canada began shipping Canadian gas in summer 2025. There are currently about half a dozen other LNG export projects in the works. According to industry sources who spoke with CTV News, an announcement is coming next week on LNG Canada Phase 2. That expansion would double the facility s production from current levels.
Wadephul also discussed Russia s escalating aggression toward European countries that support Ukraine. He addressed recent comments by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who said she would like to explore the possibility of Canada becoming the first associate member of the bloc.
