About 300 people gathered at Jimmie Simpson Park Monday evening for to remember the mother of two slain by a stray bullet on July 7.
As he took deep breaths and looked out at the silent crowd, Adrian Makurat spoke about how “our lives changed forever” with the senseless loss of his wife, Karolina Huebner-Makurat.“The girls are in a good position because I’m looking out at all the aunts and uncles they didn’t know they had,” he told the crowd in a short speech that he had not intended to make.
“I don’t have as much of a global reach as Caroline did,” Makurat said about his wife’s many travels, from Istanbul to Thailand, and of the year ahead. “Lots of milestones to fulfill for my girls, because our lives changed forever on July 7.” Marie Aragona, one of Huebner-Makurat’s closest friends, said she will always remember the radiant smile of her friend who people called Caroline.
“If you’re with your family, your friends, or even somebody you don’t know, could you please take their hand for one minute and please remember Caroline.” The crowd held hands and many closed their eyes as birds chirped and children played nearby.
