But Premier Doug Ford has his own message for Justin Trudeau’s government.

Industry Minister François-Philippe Champagne appealed to the CEO of Stellantis’ partner, Korea-based LG Energy Solution, at a state dinner in Seoul for the Canadian prime minister’s visit.Canadian officials provided little update other than to say that Champagne had a “good chat” with LG Energy’s CEO Young Soo Kwon. Kwon had signed a letter to the prime minister that warned the Windsor project is at “significant risk,” as the Star reported Monday.

“The way to ensure that the federal government’s industrial policy delivers for the whole country is to ensure that provinces that are getting the direct benefit, pay their share. And that is what’s happening,” Freeland said. This is “an investment first and foremost for Ontario,” Freeland said, adding the federal government’s resources “are not infinite.”Ottawa urged to match U.S. subsidies

Ontario contributed the same amount — $500 million — to secure a Volkswagen EV battery manufacturing plant in St. Thomas. “Stellantis and LG Energy Solution simply ask that the Canadian government keep its commitments in relation to what was agreed last February and which led us to continue construction work of the gigafactory in Windsor,” said Gosselin.

“I’m optimistic if we can come to a resolution on a deal. I’m just disappointed right now — the fact that we weren’t involved and they never talked to us,” the premier said. Freeland said Wednesday she was “really optimistic and really confident that we’re gonna get this across the line.”International Trade Minister Mary Ng denied the dispute might shake confidence in international investors that the Canadian government won’t keep its word.
