BREAKING: Ottawa is suspending mandatory random COVID-19 testing for travellers in a bid to ease airport delays.
The measure will come into force on June 11 until June 30, according to a statement from Transport Canada obtained by the Star.
“Unvaccinated travellers will still be tested on-site. As of July 1st, all testing, including for unvaccinated travellers, will be performed off-site,” says the statement, which came from Transport Minister Omar Alghabra, Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos, Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino, and Tourism Minister Randy Boissonault.
Random mandatory testing has been cited by critics as one of the public health measures gumming up major Canadian airports as travellers weather long lines to board flights in and out of the country. “The government of Canada recognizes the impact that significant wait times at some Canadian airports are having on travellers. We continue to work with airports, airlines, baggage handlers, and other partners to implement solutions to reduce delays as we approach the summer peak season,” the statement said.
