Following discussions with international leaders, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Monday that Ottawa will send lethal weapons and ammunition to Ukraine.
Ukraine has been requesting lethal weapons from Canada for months, and the federal government finally agreed to send $7.8 million worth of lethal equipment and ammunition “in light of the seriousness of the situation,” Trudeau said. The announcement follows weekend discussions between Trudeau and the President of Poland, the Chancellor of Germany and the President of Ukraine, Volodymry Zelenskyy.
In addition to the lethal equipment and ammunition, Trudeau announced Ottawa is offering a “loan of up to $500 million to the government of Ukraine.”
