The Ottawa Senators’ rookies took one on the chin Sunday afternoon.

Unless the Senators want to leave the 2022 Prospects Challenge in Buffalo empty-handed, the club will have to get its act together Monday afternoon after dropping a 7-2 decision to the Montreal Canadiens on Sunday at LECOM Harbourcenter in Buffalo.Sign up to receive daily headline news from Ottawa Citizen, a division of Postmedia Network Inc.By clicking on the sign up button you consent to receive the above newsletter from Postmedia Network Inc.

The Senators finished without forward Victor Lodin. He left the game in the first period after taking a hit along the boards Montreal’s Arber Xhekaj. Lodin didn’t return as a result of an upper body injury and the Senators didn’t like the hit. “It’s a dirty hit,” Crookshank said. “If you ask anybody in the room there’s not a whole lot of respect for that guy and how carries himself. At the end of the day, it’s hockey and you’re not going to like everyone but it’s tough to see a guy like go down for sure.”“We certainly felt it was a headshot and a little bit late,” Mann said. “The referee and crew came over and apologized they missed the call. What are you going to do in those instances? It looked like a bit of a dirty hit.

The Habs pulled out to a 3-1 lead on the strength of Xavier Simoneau at 9:29 of the second period. It was the result of a strong three-way passing play by Montreal in the Ottawa zone and Mandolese had no chance on this one. Riley Kidney scored for Montreal with seven minutes remaining in the first period while Emil Heineman gave the Habs a 1-0 advantage only 1:12 into the game. The 26 rookies will then make their way back to Ottawa and decisions will be made on which players are going to be invited to main camp. It will get under way Wednesday with medicals at the Canadian Tire Centre and the first on-ice session is Thursday.
