The Ottawa Senators had to settle for a lump of coal in their stockings as they headed into the Christmas break Thursday night.

A third-period goal by Drake Batherson sent this one to OT while Alex DeBrincat also chipped in with his 10th of the season. Ottawa missed two golden opportunities to put this away, not being able to take advantage of a pair of third-period power plays.

The Senators went into the game eight points behind the New York Islanders for the final wild-card spot in the East and one of the teams they have to leapfrog is the Caps. The club wasn’t happy with the way it played in a 5-1 loss to the Jets Tuesday or a 4-2 decision to the Minnesota Wild Sunday. But coach D.J. Smith noted before the game for the most part he’s been pleased with the way the club has played in the last month.

That extended Batherson’s point streak to 10 straight games, which ties him for the third-longest streak in franchise history. The Senators weren’t doing enough to create opportunities, especially when this was Kuemper’s first game since Dec. 3rd. The Capitals missed a couple of great chances and Washington is way too dangerous to allow that to happen.
