As the Senators prepared to face the Los Angeles Kings on Thursday, the club’s head coach was trying to turn the page after new owner Michael Andlauer fired general manager Pierre Dorion only thirty-six hours earlier and have the players ready to start a difficult November.
“The message was he believes in this coaching staff and that we can get the best out of these guys,” Smith said. “If I just reflect on the games, we’ve had some good moments, some low moments and there’s some guys we’ve got to get playing better. “You hate to see somebody lose their job,” Tkachuk said before facing the Kings. “Now, we have to look forward at a big month for us and a big game. We’ve got a big month and I think our focus has to go all-in on hockey and moving forward.
“I’m very thankful for him to give me the opportunity to come here and I worked with him every day” Smith said. “But, with sports, it’s unfortunate and it’s unfortunate for his family and everybody involved. This is a part of the business, and it’s a hard part of the business, but we have no choice but to move on for a fresh start with Michael and Steve.”
And, after closing out October with a .500 record at 4-4-0 after a 5-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday, the Senators know they have to be much better than that if they’re going to stand any chance of making the playoffs for the first time in seven years.
