The Ottawa Senators scored a big\u002Dname free agent Thursday night that brings a scoring punch.
The Senators signed unrestricted free agent Vladimir Tarasenko to a one-year, $5-million contract and it’s a move that will help the club round its top two forward lines. The 31-year-old Tarasenko, who has scored more than 30 goals six times in his NHL career, was wooed by general manager Pierre Dorion and coach D.J. Smith to play a top-six role.
Tarasenko received a full no-move clause as part of the deal and the Senators were thrilled to get him. The club is trying to make the playoffs for the first time in seven years and this. it is hoped, will be another piece that will help them reach their goal. While Tarasenko was being courted by the Carolina Hurricanes — and many felt he would sign there — this is a nice feather in the cap for Dorion and the Senators to bring him to Ottawa.Article content
The Hurricanes and Senators were viewed as the front-runners for Tarasenko before he fired his agent, and both remained interested. Tarasenko will get the chance to play alongside Norris, who is coming back from shoulder surgery, or Stutzle, so it will be a nice fit on the top two lines.
