In a shift from her usual report to the city’s board of health this week, an emotional Dr. Vera Etches, Ottawa’s medical officer of health, said she is concerned about the health of residents who are experiencing sorrow, anger, hopelessness, numbness and fear due to the tragic loss of life in the Middle East.
“I have heard that many who have survived the horrors of previous global conflicts are reliving their trauma,” she said. “Many are feeling fearful as there are dehumanizing effects of rising antisemitism, anti-Palestinian racism and Islamophobia.”there were 29 “hate-motivated” incidents brought to Ottawa police between Oct. 7 and Oct. 23. Twenty-four of those were criminal in nature and the “majority” were linked to the war,” police said.
Among that help is improving access to information on helping children cope with stressful events — something CHEO is also doing — as well as services that address post-traumatic stress disorder and other types of mental stress. “People need a sense of safety and community to be well in body, mind and spirit, and that is why at Ottawa Public Health we work to promote inclusion and equity,” she said during the meeting. “We know this can improve health outcomes for all people in Ottawa.”
