Rodney Ramsey, co-founder of the Underground Comedy Railroad tour coming to Ottawa on Feb. 20. Ramsay is co-founder with Daniel Woodrow, who grew up in Ottawa. After the challenges of the pandemic, the tour returned to the road this year, expanding its reach to include a show in Halifax, as well as Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa. In addition to Woodrow and Ramsey, performers include Keesha Brownie, Tamara Shevon, Kevin Christopher, George Rivard and Alan Shane Lewis.
As a youngster, Woodrow liked to make his own videos and audio shows. He originally thought he wanted to be an actor until he got to high school and realized he had a knack for making people laugh. When someone suggested he should do stand-up, he had to look up what it was, gaining insight from big names like Dane Cook and Jim Gaffigan.
One requirement about performing comedy on the church circuit is that it has to be “clean,” i.e. no swearing or sex jokes. While Woodrow’s style has evolved, he still tends to keep it clean.
