While officially federal in focus, the report has much to unpack for the city of Ottawa\u003B the protest\u0027s stage, the jurisdiction that first found itself on the front lines of the response, and the home of residents who felt under siege for three weeks.

Premier Doug Ford was called to apologize Friday “The statement from acting Liberal leader and local MPP John Fraser said it’s “appalling” to have a section of the report dedicated to “Ontario’s Absence.”

The report does note that testimony from Ontario’s deputy solicitor general speaks to the province not being as engaged “when protests in Ontario were limited to Ottawa,” and says “the absence of provincial engagement at the political level” is illustrated by three tripartite meetings to share information and coordinate a response where municipal and federal politicians showed up, but the province passed on its invitation. Ford told Watson he didn’t think the meetings would be productive.

“I welcome any lessons and any recommendations from any source on how we can do things better in the future. I know how distressed and frustrated and disappointed the people of Ottawa were last year when these events were taking place, and we can’t let that ever happen again in our city. And so I’m confident that with the right recommendations and the right leadership in place, that these kinds of events will be prevented in the future. And I think we’ve already seen evidence of that.

One of the report’s recommendations is that a federal government-led working group study “on a priority basis, whether changes should be made to the division of responsibilities for policing and security in the National Capital Region.”
