It was Aug. 4, 2021, and Const. Goran Beric and other officers were responding to a call at a public-housing complex on Bronson Avenue.

The man, covered in blood and in the throes of a psychotic break, lay limp on the hallway floor for more than two minutes as Ottawa Police Service Const. Goran Beric kept his boot firmly pressed on the man’s neck, saying it was the only way to keep him under control and out of range of bloody spit.

Beric was also found guilty of assault with a weapon for jabbing the man’s head as he lay on the hallway floor.It was Aug. 4, 2021, and Beric, along with other officers, was responding to a call about a bloodied, screaming man at a public-housing complex on Bronson Avenue. Beric, who has a degree in psychology, also told court he was paranoid that the man would pull a knife on him and that he didn’t know what he was responding to, but knew to expect potential danger.After hearing all of the police testimony at trial, the judge concluded that either Beric didn’t ask other officers for help or they simply couldn’t recall.Ottawa Police Service Const.
