Between a pre\u002Dexisting housing shortage and a growing population, Ottawa had better up its building game to meet housing needs in the coming years, according…
With the provincial Progressive Conservative government committing to a target of creating 1.5-million new homes over the next decade, the think tank’s Mike Moffatt and a team of analysts set out to answer two questions: is this actually a reasonable forecast of Ontario’s housing need and, if so, how much building has to happen in different parts of the province?
It’s a higher total than the housing requirement projections that underly Ottawa’s new official plan, the blueprint for the city’s development over the next 25 years. The plan’s projections see housing need rising to 509,104 dwelling units by 2031, an increase of roughly 79,326 units from 2021. To meet his institute’s housing target for Ottawa by 2031, Moffatt said the city would have to see an increase of roughly 50 per cent in the rate of new housing creation compared to the previous five years.
The Smart Prosperity Institute’s assessment of future housing needs in Ontario is significantly lower than the figures put forward in a recent Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation report on supply.Article content
