Sick leave has doubled over the course of of the pandemic, according to the update. Since the pandemic began, the provincial funding formula has included replacing teachers and other staff, but it has not met the actual costs.
But based on current trends, including the ongoing pandemic and respiratory illnesses in the population, the expected costs will exceed even that. The most recent forecast to the Ministry of Education pegged supply teacher-related costs at $33 million, although some of the increase in paying supply teachers is offset by a decrease in teacher salaries as supply teachers are used in vacant positions and more junior teachers with lower salaries are hired.
It’s also unclear whether the $10 million the board was receiving from the province for COVID-19 “learning recovery” will continue. The money has been used in areas ranging from delivering remote learning to supports for special education to enhanced cleaning standards.Article content School boards operate on a fiscal year that aligns with the school year, starting in September and ending Aug. 31. The finished budget must be approved by trustees before the end of June and, by law, it must balance.
