On a pleasantly cool morning in late October, an osprey circled high in the clear blue sky above McGovern Lake in Herman Park.I calmly explained that the bird was an osprey. “An eagle flies on broad wings held straight out,” I said, while holding my arms out straight.
The old professor in me began lurching out, so I shut up. It’s enough to let people enjoy the exhilarating sight of an osprey. About a third of the North American population breeds in Canada, while most others breed across the northeastern U.S., the Atlantic Coast, the Great Lakes, and the Pacific Northwest.
After we banned DDT in 1972, the osprey population rebounded due in part to their use of artificial nesting platforms, power poles and other tall structures for nesting. That was fortunate for the birds because much of their historical nesting locations were in trees that had given way to development.
