Oshawa Mayor Dan Carter is voicing support for a slew of new provincial measures aimed at clearing encampments and adding shelter space.shared the podium with Premier Doug Ford at Thursday’s new conference“As winter sets in, the reality of encampments and their harsh conditions is a heartbreaking reminder that more must be done to ensure everyone in our community has access to safe and stable housing,” said Carter in a release.
Judges would also have the ability to issue harsher penalties to people charged under the Trespass to Property Act, particularly if they have histories of reoffending. “All of us that stand in front of you today are committed in regards to making sure that we represent the families that have loved ones out on the streets that are suffering with mental illness and addiction,” said the Oshawa mayor. “We want to make sure we to everything possible to save lives, not take lives away.”
Following Thursday’s conference, it was not immediately clear when the new provincial measures would take effect. MPPs have since gone on their holiday break.“With this announcement, I am optimistic that collectively we are moving towards addressing Ontario’s homelessness, mental health and addictions crisis and providing compassionate services and safety for those who are most vulnerable.
As a collaborative partner, the City has been key in helping to advance several innovative programs offered by the Region, including championing the Oshawa Micro-Homes Project, Durham Region Street Outreach Program , mobile Primary Care Outreach Program , and the Mental Health Outreach Program.
