Next year's Oscars are delayed two months, to April 25, due to coronavirus

The eligibility period for Academy Awards consideration has been extended beyond the usual Dec. 31 deadline. For the upcoming Oscars, a feature film must now have a qualifying release date between January 1, 2020 and February 28, 2021. As previously announced, for this year only, movies that premiere on streaming platforms will be eligible in Oscar categories.

“For over a century, movies have played an important role in comforting, inspiring, and entertaining us during the darkest of times. They certainly have this year," Academy president David Rubin and Academy CEO Dawn Hudson said in a joint statement Monday."Our hope, in extending the eligibility period and our awards date, is to provide the flexibility filmmakers need to finish and release their films without being penalized for something beyond anyone’s control.
