Oscars: Academy Announces New Standards For Equity And Inclusion, Returns To Firm 10 Best Picture Nominees
After a series of meetings, and approval Thursday by the board of governors, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the next phase of its ongoing efforts toward equity and inclusion, Academy Aperture 2025. This comes after a previous initiative largely aimed at making membership regarding women and people of color more representative, a goal that was set for this year which AMPAS says has been surpassed.
Also part of the ongoing effort will be increased efforts to highlight diversity in every way at the new Academy Museum Of Motion Pictures set to open December 14, 2020. And AMPAS will also establish an Office of Representation , Inclusion , and Equity to oversee Aperture 2025 to be led by Academy COO Christine Simmons in partnership with Membership Managing Director , Relations and Awards Lorenza Munoz. New members invited to join the Academy will be announced next month.
The 93rd Oscars are currently set for February 28, 2021. There has been wide speculation that the Academy is considering moving that date back due to problems created by the Coronavirus pandemic but there was no mention in their release of any plans for that at this point.The Academy will encourage equitable hiring practices and representation on and off screen in order to better reflect the diversity of the film community.
