More than a year after war broke out between Israel and Hamas, kids with ties to the region share their thoughts as the conflict unfolds.

He found out that his family in Israel had found safety in shelters. His uncle, a reservist in the Israeli army, had been called up to fight.“It was scary,” he told CBC Kids News from his home in North York, Ontario.Uri has some Jewish friends, but none with the same connection to Israel.“We checked in on each other to make sure that everything was OK and that was a good feeling,” he said.He used to just go about his day not thinking about the conflict in Israel much.

“They, like, deeply understand the genocide and the history of Palestine. So that makes it, like, easier to talk about … and raise awareness,” she said.Through her friendships, Manar has organized events to raise awareness about the war and cultural displays to share her Palestinian heritage.Manar is hoping for a ceasefire, which would put an end to the fighting.

On Sept. 21, people in Tel Aviv, Israel, attended a protest against the government and to show support for the hostages who were kidnapped by Hamas during the attack on Oct. 7, 2023. About 100 hostages have still not been released. He said it helps to have people to talk to about his feelings toward the war, and wishes that Canadian kids understood that it’s not “a black-and-white issue.”
