The Ontario Provincial Police are warning that people at risk of self-harm have been receiving packages of a potentially dangerous substance through the mail after being purchased online.
The packages containing sodium nitrite in the form of white crystals. It is commonly used as a food additive, especially in the production of processed meats. Anyone who intentionally consumes excessive amounts of sodium nitrite will experience reduced oxygen levels, impaired breathing, and could die.
