Edward Keenan: Why some local ballplayers are crying ‘foul’ over Centennial Park’s revamped facilities
— Centennial is a giant park, people reason, surely there’s enough space in the new plan to include some simple batting cages run by a long-time tenant who pays rent to the city and provides a valued service?
What there used to be a bunch of in Toronto, and now there are not, are places like Diamond Beach, where you can, on whatever weekend afternoon or random weeknight when you have nothing to do, just drop by, walk up and swing away, paying as you play. When I was a kid, we’d visit such places in warehouses around the city. Now, unless I’ve missed finding out about them in a decade of looking, there’s only this place at Centennial. And soon that will be gone too.
I understand this stuff is tricky for the city. There’s an actual shortage of sports facilities in our parks — cricket pitches, soccer fields, baseball diamonds. Any team or league trying to find a permit for a regulation field will find they are all booked solid, for most sports you can name. Plans like the one at Centennial to add new facilities you can actually play games on are needed. And welcome.
