Opinion: To save her from self-delusion, anxiety and — eventually — heartbreak, I’ve made a decision: I will not subject my young daughter to being a Leafs fan, EmmaRoseTeitel writes.
This year my wife’s birthday fell on the same day as the Toronto Maple Leafs playoffs home opener against the Tampa Bay Lightning. She’s not a Leafs fan nor is she a fan of me when I watch them .
As in, the Leafs would be swept away in four games flat, as opposed to the usual seven, because in her mind, a team seemingly addicted to disappointing its fan base would certainly relapse — only this time more efficiently. In fact, my wife was sitting beside me when I wrote this, and she asked me to dictate, verbatim: “They never win. You’re pathetic.”It turns out there is another person in my household who like my wife, is not a diehard Leafs fan. This isn’t because she knows it’s a miserable existence, but because, at 21 months, she’s too young to think anything is miserable.
Let her be first and foremost a Raptors fan or a Jays fan, or better yet one of those kids with no hometown loyalty who picks their favourite team simply because they like the logo .
