“Paul, you’ve got to go to Winters. Don’t let that bastard win it, Paul — he isn’t even a Liberal.”

If the twittersphere and commentariat are any indication, we should have rolled out the smelling salts and fainting couches before we pressed send. The nerve! The sheer gall! The treachery! Who were we — a group, incidentally, that included nine candidates from last year’s provincial election — to encourage someone who was not even a Liberal to run for the Liberal leadership.

The bigger concern is the state of our politics and the cynicism and malaise that has enveloped it. Last year’s provincial election was the lowest turnout in the history of Ontario — only 43.5 per cent.
