Legislators on Capitol Hill will soon vote on the biggest climate crisis bill in U.S. history. But the U.S. bill has sparked criticism in Canada of this country’s shortcomings in its fight against climate crisis. Opinion by David Olive.
Legislators on Capitol Hill will soon vote on the biggest climate crisis bill in U.S. history.for renewable energy projects; research on existing and new alternative energy sources; and programs to encourage reduced energy consumption.
For instance, the proposed U.S. bill provides climate-related investments that are about three times bigger per capita than those in Canada, notes the David Suzuki Foundation. There is a crazy quilt of federal and provincial energy subsidies that take many forms, among which are oilpatch supports that theYou cannot achieve progress without measuring it. And that is impossible to do for lack of a proper inventory of total state assistance to the energy sector. Ottawa has promised but failed to deliver one.
But that pledge too is packed with loopholes, making exceptions for pre-existing subsidies and on national security, industrial development and other grounds.Canada’s Big Four oil producers collectively reaped almost $15 billion in profits last year, on a more than doubling in their revenues. That unproven technology is expected to be deployed mostly by the fossil fuels sector. It is designed to bury GHG emission deep underground., the amount of that subsidy would have taken only a modest bite out of the Big Four’s profits over the next five years.
