Schools should not be allowed to become an unregulated marketplace with each teacher making their own decision, writes Alok Mukherjee.
What price may Ontario’s children pay for the decisions of their elders that have a bearing on their health and safety?
Parents concerned about the potential risks posed by the probably well-intentioned – but, in their minds, ill-informed – decision of some teachers to form larger groups and disregard compulsory mask wearing, have no recourse since these actions are consistent with provincial and board direction.and the numbers are still running at a high level. Reportedly, Canada has already identified two cases of the new XE variant.
Schools, especially elementary schools, should not be allowed to become an unregulated marketplace with each teacher making their own decision. But this is exactly what an April 13 memo to parents from the TDSB does. While “asking that all staff and students please wear a well-fitting mask when indoors in schools,” it maintains that “this remains a personal decision.”
Further, we have already learned a great deal about the differential impact of COVID in various communities, based on a variety of socio-economic determinants. There are communities where parents are able to challenge their kids’ teachers or engage with them on an informed basis, and have the time, the ability or the language capacity to do so. They know the system well enough to take up their concerns with the higher-ups.
