St. Margaret’s was no longer my childhood church where our family would come on Sunday mornings; it was a much-needed community centre. So what could $10,000 do? I like to believe $10,000 could bring back hope. Opinion by Johanna Wang-Cardinal

It had been a long time since I had last set foot inside St. Margaret’s Anglican Church in New Toronto. This occasion was my mother’s funeral. What greeted me outside the church gate was a wooden bookcase on the sidewalk that said, “If you need some food, please help yourself. If you have more than enough, please stock this shelf.”

Julie McMillan, Project Coordinator confirmed that St. Margaret’s is indeed a very busy place. In February alone, St. Margaret’s offered laundry and shower services for the homeless, a variety of meals via “Maggie’s Family Fridays” or community dinners and Sunday lunch, Black History month films, discussions, not to mention harm reduction initiatives and Alcoholics Anonymous.

Added to that struggle, is their 22-year-old elevator. This elevator is just as vital to the community as St. Margaret’s is: an elevator my mother would have depended on when she was alive. In 2022 alone, various repairs and maintenance work was done to the elevator to a total of just over $9,700. However, the elevator has been out of service since December. The elevator company, with whom the church has a maintenance contract, has been accommodating and simply trying their best to do their job. Final prognosis of the problem: a motor replacement costing $10,975 plus HST. A down payment of $4,000 would be required before any work starts.
