season is a long and arduous trek. This year’s schedule is 82 games in 186 days, which is one game per team every 2.27 days, half at home and half in the 31 opposing burbs spread from corner to corner in North America.

The break has evolved over the years, with the original version a mere four days. The players participating in all-star events had zero rest; they paid the price for their brilliance. But all players were rested and ready to go this week, injuries aside, and if the first few days are the new norm we’re in for a great closing stretch through the March 3 trade deadline, and the month-and-a-bit that follows.

The beauty was that half the players in the league werewatching and waiting for their turns to re-engage. A mid-season Monday night game found a way to the top of the interest charts.
