World War II’s devastation shocked America into abandoning its traditional arm’s-length approach to the rest of the world. After the war, the U.S.
kept troops in both Europe and the Pacific, sent help through the Marshall Plan, created the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, and joined the United Nations, the International Monetary Fund and the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade. The result was tremendous progress for mankind. American leadership has improved the condition of life for nearly everyone, especially the American people.
