TTC invites a ‘death spiral’ with its service cuts — but few at Toronto city hall seem to care Why is no one fighting to protect the public transit service? Opinion by GraphicMatt
The size of Toronto’s rapid transit network may look pathetic when compared to those cities, but at least the subway service is good.Because Tuesday the TTC board will meet at city hall
That’s an extra three minutes and 14 seconds of waiting. Those affected will include people attending concerts and sports games, dining out at local restaurants, and people trying to get to shift work jobs. The report to the TTC board tries to put a positive spin on the service changes, set to go into effect on March 26, pitching this process as being necessary to “match capacity with demand” while highlighting that the plan also includes some minor service increases on a handful of routes. But don’t kid yourself — these cuts are just the beginning. A second round of “service adjustments” is already planned for this May.
History suggests cuts like this only lead to more ridership declines, which motivate more cuts. Transit experts call it the “transit death spiral.”
