And then there is Ontario Place, where a historic chance to redevelop what was a civic jewel and a common good landed on secret negotiations and a giveaway of precious public land to a pricey private spa, and cars.

Giving away Ontario Place won’t change the trajectory of the city, other than drawing more traffic in a downtown filled with traffic. But like the highways, like the Greenbelt, the worst part about giving it away is that it is irrevocable. “I think that one thing that Doug Ford has done very well is he’s been very consistent in marking out an ideological turf, and I think his ideological turf is, I’m for sprawl, and cars, and big business.”

So why did Toronto spend four decades not building subways, or trains? Keesmaat points out it was because the energy was directed toward building out the suburbs: Vaughan, Pickering, Mississauga and more. Ontario is now dragging the energy back out there, with all the negative implications that come with it, with a premier who says stuff like, “everyone’s dream is to have a little white picket fence.
