Opinion: Locally, there’s a to-do list for Canada in mitigating against climate-crisis dangers. The initiatives that follow are practical, not fanciful. They need to be kicked into top gear.
In his opening address to the latest UN-sponsored global summit on climate change now underway in Egypt, Antonio Guterres, the UN secretary general, exclaimed on Monday that “we are on a highway to climate hell with our foot on the accelerator.”
Closer to home, fortunately, we still observe the environmental slogan, “Think globally, act locally.” In that way, the Scandinavian system solves one of the biggest issues with intermittent wind and solar by making use of it when its available and falling back on forms of continuous power when it isn’t.
If four sovereign countries can overcome parochialism to provide themselves energy security and clean power, sub-governments in Canada should be able to do the same.During a historic energy shortage in Europe, Olaf Scholz, the German chancellor, was in the Newfoundland port town of Stephenville in August to forge a green hydrogen alliance between his country and Canada.worldwide by 2050, by which time it will account for about 10 per cent of global power needs.
