Opinion: The San Diego Union-Tribune Editorial Board no longer endorses John Hemmerling for sheriff [Opinion]
with three men, one of whom beat her to the point of fracturing her jaw, requiring multiple surgeries.
In an interview we recorded with his permission and are making public for voters to assess, Hemmerling could have offered a heartfelt apology. He could have promised to make a public statement of regret and offered to meet with members of the transgender, or more broadly LGBTQ, community. Despite that guidance, the reality is that it’s the sheriff who has authority over jails. Not state lawmakers. Not county supervisors. And terms like “allows” and “shall look for ways” underscore how much discretion the sheriff has. So we should take sheriff’s candidates at their words on this issue.

San Diegans have a difficult choice at a very difficult time. The jails are a mess. Protocols aren’t keeping inmates alive, cell checks are too often cursory at best, the cameras that are trained on cells aren’t always working, and the budgeted behavioral and health care specialists who might help aren’t being hired fast enough.
