Even though he’s one of the highest-paid executives in pro sports, the man has always had a gift for connecting to the masses.president can put himself on the level of the disgruntled fan who, in the frustrating throes of the disappointing season that ended with last week’s play-in collapse to the Chicago Bulls, might have been as apt to cheer for the Raptors as he was to rain boos on them from the 300 level.
The problem, of course, is that Ujiri is the very person who put “this team” together. On Friday, as much as he lamented the team’s broken culture — not to mention the “complacency” and “selfishness” that seeped into its on-court performance — he also pointed the first finger of tangible accountability a long way from his own chest.
It’s not simply a coincidence that Ujiri would have that bit of Celtics franchise history top of mind. It was only a couple of off-seasons ago that the Boston front office, much like this Toronto one, thought its collection of talent ought to be better than a .500 product.
All of which is to say: Whether he’s delusional or not, you can easily see how Ujiri might view the hiring of Udoka as charting the straightest possible line to a magically improved Raptors team. And no one needs to gloss over the potential complications of bringing in Udoka. It’s well known that Udoka, in the wake of his highly touted rookie season as a head coach, was suspended by the Celtics for one year for violating team rules after an improper consensual relationship with a female team employee.
