As a refresher, when the pandemic hit in 2020 and millions of works lost their jobs, the employment insurance system could not sustain the pressure and largely collapsed. Over 40 per cent of workers did not qualify for the essential financial support needed from EI, therefore, the government had to quickly create the CERB program to fill the gaps.
The argument from the Liberal government on this decision has been that the greatest impact of the pandemic has largely passed, the labour market is rebounding, and the measures were never meant to be a solution. "The groundwork had been laid and these measures were a start to a more accessible, sustainable, and supportive social support system. However, despite countless calls, the benefits to workers, and a smoother administration system—the clock will turn back to 2019 on Sept. 25."There will be critics who say having better EI will only encourage workers not to work, virtue signalling to the challenges in our current labour market vacancies.
