Opinion: The 'Build more homes' mantra ignores certain Southern California realities [Opinion]
” : In last Sunday’s Business section, the economists said San Diego isn’t doing enough to encourage home construction. They want government to do more.
Even the free enterprise crowd didn’t stop at deregulation. Builders need our help. Yet none said how we’d provide the water for the homes. There was also a story last week about Scottsdale, Arizona, cutting off 500 homes in Rio Verde Foothills that have been hauling in all water from Scottsdale. The public official who signed off on those 500 building permits should probably go to jail.
Water isn’t the only issue. New homes need schools, parks, pothole-free roads, health services, clean energy, etc. Let’s build fewer new homes until we fix our other problems. It was disappointing that every Econometer respondent favors construction of more homes. Local governments always favor population growth over protecting the environment. Population growth bolsters the economy and creates jobs.
In 1990, San Diego County harbored about sixty endangered and threatened species. Now, there are about two hundred threatened species. The policy of local governments to sustain the economy and jobs shouldn’t sacrifice our natural environment to accommodate our expanding population.in the wild or nearly so. Is there anyone who thinks this is good for the planet or for us? Humans are the only species with the ability to appreciate and understand the dangers of losing our biodiversity.
