Opinion Althia Raj: The broken promise Liberals won’t let Justin Trudeau forget

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau can’t seem to shake off his broken promise on electoral reform — even with members of his own party.

In an online forum for party supporters to discuss policy ahead of this weekend’s national convention, several noted the impact of the party’s broken promise. At the Grits’ convention, Peter Brannen is straddling the door of an organizing workshop titled ‘Winning new seats in non-urban ridings.’ He’s handing out leaflets and asking for support for the resolution which calls on the party to urge the Government of Canada to establish a non-partisan national citizens’ assembly on electoral reform to continue the work started in 2014.Brannen, who lives just outside Seeley’s Bay, Ont.

Nearby, Joan Mercer Fryer is also handing out pamphlets. She’s a member of fair vote Canada, which is pushing this resolution. “I want people to think that their vote counts,” she says. “I strategically vote sometimes instead of with my heart, which I don’t want to do anymore.” Reception to the resolution has been “very good,” she says. “Many have been very supportive, especially the younger caucus.”

Back in 2019 and 2021, if seats were allocated in per-vote fashion, then Conservative leaders Andrew Scheer and Erin O’Toole would have had the most seats of any party. Without a deal with the New Democrats — arguably, one that gives them much more power than the current confidence agreement — the Grits wouldn’t have been able to govern.
