Gregor Chisholm: Take comfort, Blue Jays fans, the season isn’t as bad as it feels

and another underwhelming road trip, and someone could be fooled into thinking the walls are caving in on one of the pre-season’s most-hyped teams.

The Jays finished that difficult stretch with a 20-19 record while splitting 12 series. That’s nothing to brag about and yet, somehow, it felt so much worse. Yet while the Jays struggled against their rivals, they performed quite well against everyone else, going 17-8. That likely wasn’t enough to keep their hopes alive in the East, but the Jays remain in the thick of the wild-card hunt, much like they were before this stretch began.

With the toughest stretch behind them, the Jays have the 12th-hardest remaining schedule in the majors. The Rays, Orioles, Angels and Mariners are among the post-season hopefuls who have a more difficult path. The second-toughest stretch won’t come until late September when the Jays close out the season with 12 consecutive games against the Yankees and Rays.

The pitching, for the most part, has been fine. There have been occasional hiccups, but the Jays are getting the production they need out of Kevin Gausman, who limited the Marlins to three runs across six innings in the finale, Chris Bassitt, José Berríos and Yusei Kikuchi.
