Opinion: San Diegans are balking at city's sidewalk repair proposal [Opinion]
Facing 37,000 sidewalk repairs and millions in injury payouts, San Diego wants property owners to step up — and assume liability
” : A rash of crumbling sidewalks — and millions in payouts to people injured on them — have prompted city officials to revisit the controversial issue of whether owners must fix damaged nearby sidewalks. Sidewalks are not the property of homeowners. I think doing so would make homeowners liable for people injured on sidewalks.Example: There are approximately 2.25 miles of separated bike lanes on Fifth Avenue that appear to be rarely used but car lanes were reduced, impeding the flow of traffic.
If the city really wants to incentivize homeowners and reduce liability, it should offer a $100 rebate against property taxes to have the repairs completed.
