Opinion: Prioritizing the safety and well-being of transgender people — including this educator — and all students is the clear objective. But those objectives have been brushed aside.
On Jan. 14, 2001, I served as the officiant of Canada’s first gay marriage. I remember calling my parents the night before the ceremony in case the avalanche of death threats caught up to me.Today, that fear has faded. The rights we fought for and the victory we won remain.
Whatever your opinion on this issue, it’s crystal clear that the public conversation around it is on the wrong track. In my experience, this conversation requires everything it has lacked thus far: sincerity, civility and calm, trust in those institutions working to find solutions, and faith in reasonable debate.
The second camp consists of those who eagerly express they are incapable of intolerance, but nonetheless advance a kind of indirect transphobia that is deeply unproductive. Sadly, however, the ferocity of this debate has generated the illusion that only the loudest voices count, and that a path forward cannot exist.
