All three major national parties support ambitious targets and see no political gains to be made by playing the anti-immigrant card. But it’s hard to overstate how unusual Canada is in this regard. Almost everywhere else, immigration is a highly charged and divisive issue. Take, for example, Britain. Just this week, a centre for processing migrants was firebombed. And the country’s home secretary, Suella Braverman, warned the influx of people landing illegally on the south coast amounts to an “invasion.
