Opinion: With Torontonians expected to vote in a mayoral byelection, it’s time for Premier Doug Ford to allow cities to use ranked ballots for their elections again — and for Toronto City Council to actually use them.
The winner would actually be the candidate with the most support, something not guaranteed by our current system. Ultimately, a ranked ballot election would be more fair and more democratic.
In 2020, the Ford government revoked municipalities’ ability to use ranked ballots. Now, by moving quickly to reverse that decision and re-authorize ranked ballot elections, Ford has an opportunity to secure the future of the city; and by adopting their use, Interim Mayor Jennifer McKelvie would have an opportunity to leave a lasting legacy as a champion of democracy.
