Until recently foreign journalists have had relative freedom to report on Russia, even as Russian media were hounded, threatened and forced to close down if they deviated from Putin’s Orwellian propaganda that labelled the war in Ukraine a “special military operation” and reports of war crimes and atrocities asThe repression of media freedom has developed over decades.
But the Russian media was singled out for the harshest treatment. Anna Politkovskaya, the bravest of Russian journalists reporting on Chechnya, was arrested, subjected to mock execution, then almost fatally poisoned. But she continued her investigative journalism, and wasAfter political protests broke out from 2011 to 2013, Putin redoubled his efforts to rein in the media.
