Chantal Hébert: Pierre Poilievre is unpopular in Canada’s second-largest province — and so are his policies
MONTREAL—It’s hard to get a second chance to make a good first impression. Pierre Poilievre will be trying to do just that as he embarks on an early-year visit to Quebec next week.
Throughout its history and under its various incarnations, the federal Conservative party has almost always faced steep uphill election battles in Quebec. The collateral damage to the party in Quebec as a result of a scorched earth front-runner campaign was compounded by the departure of the party’s former Quebec lieutenant from the federal caucus.
In Trudeau’s home province, the Conservative leader’s tendency to overreach at the expense of hard facts mostly comes across as a symptom of political immaturity. When Erin O’Toole was ousted from the leader’s office last year, it appears he took with him the capital of good will he had accumulated on behalf of his party with the CAQ government.
