: “The number of people experiencing disability is increasing due to a rise in chronic health conditions and population aging.” Link this with an increase in long-COVID patients and an economic recovery plan that lacks foresight and inclusivity, and our already fragile health care system seems on a collision course.
It is disappointing to see the lack of empathy and consideration by our government, especially since the 2020 throne speech promised to introduce a new Canada Disability Benefit. Such a program would work as a supplement to other benefits that are already in place in our provinces, leading to further discussions around what it should look like. Unfortunately, this feels like an empty promise, as the latest federal budget released last weekChange is needed now, and Canadians agree.
“People with disabilities cannot be forgotten anymore,” says Khedr. “It’s not just about me and not you. It is about all of us who can acquire a disability and find ourselves living in poverty. We need the government to work with us to bring forward a meaningful Canada Disability Benefit. We feel that there is a genuine commitment on part of the government to bring forward this benefit, but we will keep asking ‘Where’s the bill?’ until one is tabled.
