However, the salient point is that corruption is one of the tools of hybrid warfare that Russia has used to keep Ukraine within its zone of influence — and also relied on heavily when launching the escalated phase of the invasion. Putin even lamented about new anti-corruption institutions in Ukraine in his speech when he launched the full-scale invasion.
Pundits who say that Ukraine sooner or later must sit at the negotiating table with Russia and should face the hard decision of giving up some portion of its territory in order to stop the war miss the whole point outlined just above. As a matter of fact, Crimea is intertwined with Ukraine through many natural historical connections; more importantly, it is recognized as an integral part of Ukraine under international law. In 1991, the majority of the population of Crimea voted, in a free and democratic referendum, in favour of independence for Ukraine. The right of Ukraine to Crimea is undeniable, and Russia must be ousted from there.
