Opinion: On World AIDS Day, let's acknowledge inequities and envision the end of the AIDS epidemic [Opinion]

This World AIDS Day, let us acknowledge the inequalities that are holding back progress in ending AIDS. Intersecting issues like homelessness, economic and social inequities, along with public health issues like COVID-19, mental illness and the battle against drug and substance use all impact our ability to halt the spread of HIV.

The inequities perpetuating the AIDS epidemic are not inevitable. As a society, we must acknowledge our shortcomings and improve our efforts at addressing the challenges impeding our progress. We must work toward legislation, policies and practices to tackle the stigma and exclusion faced by people living with HIV and by marginalized populations. To that end, we must continue engaging our elected officials to keep these issues top of mind.

Her grandparents were in search of resources to learn how to best care for their granddaughter. Years later, I reconnected with the family when the girl became a client of Mama’s Kitchen as a 12-year-old.
