Opinion: Now, more than ever, I am subjected to rude remarks about my weight. Help me stop it. [Opinion]
is a cultural resources management professional, mother of two young men and advocate for Indigenous rights, health and wellness. She lives on Barona Reservation.
I was teased as a child for being so thin, and have endured backhanded compliments about my weight for most of my adult life. I’ve always just regarded these types of remarks with a grain of salt as I felt that, unfortunately, the majority of women face the same indignities to one end of the spectrum or the other as regularly as myself.
This shaming, usually thinly veiled as concern for my health, falls recklessly from the mouths of family, friends and strangers alike. For example, I very recently had a woman say to me, “Girl, you need to eat some hamburgers! What’s going on? You look unwell!” She followed this up by exclaiming to my boyfriend that he should really force-feed me some hamburgers because I am far too skinny.
Without hesitation, he indicated that such speech would not be tolerated — to the point of hurling some choice expletives at the offender. Why is it acceptable to tell me and so many other women that we are “too skinny” or that we “look ill”?
